Korean Shingo pears are premium Asian pears known for their large size, weighing 14 to 24 ounces per fruit, with a spherical to slightly ovate shape. The fruit features thin, russeted skin in shades of light brown to butterscot gold with a slightly sandy texture. The white-to-ivory flesh is firm, tender, and exceptionally crisp with a succulent crunch that maintains its texture even during extended storage.

These pears offer a refreshing, delicately sweet flavor with honeyed, floral notes and hints of caramelized sugar and melon, with low acidity and moderate sugar content averaging 13 to 14 degrees Brix. Unlike European pears, Shingo pears are fully ripened on the tree and remain crisp rather than softening, making them ready to eat immediately after harvest.

Shingo pears are rich in vitamin C to strengthen the immune system, fiber to regulate digestion, and vitamin K to support bone growth and blood clotting. They also provide potassium for fluid balance, vitamin A for organ health, copper for connective tissues, and calcium for strong bones. In Korean cuisine, the pears are popularly used fresh as a dessert, shredded into marinades for bulgogi and galbi, incorporated into kimchi, or served with cold naengmyeon noodles. They pair well with herbs like mint and rosemary, spices including cinnamon and ginger, and nuts such as almonds and pistachios.

Originally developed in Japan in 1915 and introduced to Korea in the 1930s, Shingo pears are labor-intensive to cultivate, requiring manual thinning, protective wrapping, and hand harvesting. In Korea, they are traditionally given as gifts during Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) as symbols of appreciation, with their golden, round appearance resembling the full harvest moon.
