Château Pontet-Canet is a renowned Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru) red Bordeaux wine from the prestigious Pauillac appellation in the Médoc region of France, presented here in an impressive 3-liter format. Owned and managed by the Tesseron family since 1975, the estate has risen to produce wines widely regarded as performing well above its 1855 classification, rivaling the finest Second Growths in exceptional vintages.
The 81-hectare estate is planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 62%), along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot on deep gravel soils over clay and limestone. Château Pontet-Canet became the first major Bordeaux producer to earn official organic (AB) certification in 2010, and has practiced certified biodynamic viticulture since 2005. Postier Breton horses work the vineyards to aerate the soil without compaction, and the estate utilizes geothermal energy in its cellars. Grapes are destemmed by hand and vinified in wooden and concrete vats, then aged in French oak barrels and traditional amphorae.
The wine is known for its complexity and depth, with aromas of black currant, blackberry, cedar, tobacco, licorice, and dark earth, supported by firm, refined tannins and a long, elegant finish. Best enjoyed with 10–15 years of bottle age, reaching its peak between 15 and 45 years in top vintages. Serve at approximately 60°F (15.5°C), and decant young vintages for 2–4 hours. Pairs well with roasted and grilled meats including lamb, beef, duck, and veal, as well as rich fish such as tuna.
