Peonies are hardy perennial shrubs that thrive in USDA Hardiness Zones 3–8 with full sun to part sun exposure. Plants mature to a rounded habit, spreading up to 36 inches wide, and bloom reliably each year in late spring to early summer. Once established, peonies are long-lived plants that can continue to flower for generations. Their large, fragrant blooms also make excellent cut flowers and are known to attract butterflies.

Plant in a location with well-drained soil and full sun. Dig a hole 2–3 inches deep and set the root so the crown rests about 1 inch below the soil line. Water thoroughly after planting.
