Château Branaire-Ducru is a prestigious Fourth Growth (Quatrième Cru Classé) red wine from the Saint-Julien appellation of the Médoc in Bordeaux, France, classified in the landmark 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification. This 3-liter double magnum format is equivalent to four standard 750ml bottles, making it an exceptional format for entertaining, cellaring, or gifting. The estate traces its origins to 1680 when it was part of the expansive Beychevelle property, eventually becoming its own distinct château in the mid-19th century when Gustave Ducru added his name to create the Branaire-Ducru legacy. The estate is currently owned by Patrick Maroteaux, who acquired it in 1988.
The vineyards span approximately 50 to 60 hectares across Saint-Julien, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 65-70%), complemented by Merlot (22-28%), Petit Verdot (4%), and Cabernet Franc (3-4%). Vines averaging 35 years of age are harvested entirely by hand. Winemaking employs a gravity-flow system to minimize handling stress on the grapes, with primary fermentation lasting approximately three weeks in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is then aged for 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 50% new oak, giving it structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
The wine presents a deep, velvety ruby color with an expressive nose of aromatic blackcurrants, spice, and smoke. On the palate it is graceful and refined, with well-structured tannins, fine balance, and a sleek, lingering finish. The double magnum format allows for a slower, more gradual aging process, often resulting in greater complexity and longevity compared to standard bottles.
