It is finished using three distinct woods — 200-year-old oak, maple, and cherry — a process the distillery calls WoodCraft Finishing. The bourbon is built on a 36% rye mash bill, giving it a notably spicy and complex character.

The Ultimate Spirit Challenge awarded Dexter Three Wood a score of 95 points, naming it one of the Top 100 Spirits in the world and one of just 12 bourbons on that list. The brand takes its name from Edmund Dexter, a 19th-century Cincinnati whiskey expert who hosted notable guests including Charles Dickens and the Prince of Wales (future King Edward VII).
