Château Laforge is a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru from the Bordeaux region of France, produced by the Maltus family estate. The château takes its name from a former owner who was a local blacksmith — "laforge" meaning "the forge" in French. Jonathan Maltus acquired the 5.8-hectare vineyard in 1998, assembling parcels from multiple terroirs ranging from just outside the village of Saint-Emilion near Château Grand Pontet to plots near Château Monbousquet. Soils include clay, sand, and limestone.
The wine is a blend of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, vinified in temperature-controlled wood vats with malolactic fermentation completed in French oak barrels. It is aged in 80% new French oak, lending the wine a characteristic toasty richness. Winemaking takes place at the modern gravity-flow cellars of the associated estate, Château Teyssier. Annual production is approximately 2,500 cases.
The nose displays black cherry, vanilla, licorice, smoke, and dried flowers, with espresso and incense notes in certain vintages. The palate is medium-bodied, soft, and round with polished tannins and a finish of dark red pit fruits, refreshing mint, and lingering licorice. Best vintages include 2022, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2015, 2010, and 2009. Decant young bottles for 1–2 hours and allow at least 4–7 years of bottle age for optimal enjoyment; peak drinking window is 5–15 years from vintage. Pairs well with beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, hearty pasta, and mushroom dishes. Serve at 15.5°C (60°F).
