The Dakota Pinnacle Birch (Betula platyphylla 'Fargo') is a superior ornamental shade tree developed at the North Dakota State University Research Arboretum, offered here in a #7 container size (approximately 6.7 gallons / 25.5 liters), ready for immediate planting in your landscape.
This variety is prized for its narrow, columnar to pyramidal growth habit, making it ideal for tight spaces, streetscapes, and accent planting. It reaches a mature height of 30–35 feet with a spread of just 10–12 feet. The bark starts out orange-gray and transitions over time to a striking creamy white with darker undertones, providing year-round visual interest. Spring and summer bring vibrant green foliage, while fall delivers a brilliant golden-yellow display — often the first to show fall color and the last to drop its leaves.
One of the Dakota Pinnacle's most valued traits is its exceptional hardiness and disease resistance. It is significantly more resistant to the bronze birch borer than most other birch varieties and tolerates cold climates down to -30°F (Zone 3–7). It adapts well to a wide range of soil conditions including acidic, sandy, loamy, and even heavy clay or alkaline soils, and handles urban pollution with ease.
Plant in a location with full sun to partial shade (4–6 hours daily), in well-drained soil. Water deeply at least twice a week for the first three years until established, then supplement during drought periods. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and protect roots. Pruning is generally not needed; if desired, avoid pruning during active sap flow in spring.
