Pelissero Barbaresco Nubiola is a 100% Nebbiolo red wine from the Barbaresco DOCG appellation in Piedmont, Northern Italy, produced by the Pelissero family estate. The "Nubiola" name pays homage to the ancient designation for the Nebbiolo grape, first documented in 1330 by jurist Pier Dè Crescenzi in his agricultural treatise "De Ruralium Commodorum," which described it as "a sort of black grape called Nubiola… wonderfully vinous and adapted for wine making."
The grapes are drawn from six small lots scattered across the three historic Barbaresco villages of Treiso, Barbaresco, and Neive, with vines planted between 1980 and 2004 at a density of 5,000 plants per hectare. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature with programmed pumping-over, followed by aging in a combination of small French oak barriques and traditional 50-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, with proportions varied by vintage to best express the Nebbiolo variety.
The wine shows an intense ruby red color. On the nose it delivers both fruity and floral notes ranging from ripe red fruit and cherry to officinal herbs, with layers of oak, tobacco, and leather emerging with air. On the palate it is soft, velvety, and round, finishing with the characteristic slightly dry, astringent closure that defines Nebbiolo. Alcohol content is 15%. Contains sulfites. Pairs well with roasted and braised beef, lamb, rich pasta dishes, and game meats such as venison.
