The Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage is a Swiss-made automatic GMT watch from Alpina's aviation-inspired Startimer collection. Rooted in vintage pilot watch aesthetics, the watch features a distinctive barrel-shaped stainless steel case with a compressor-style design measuring 42mm wide with approximately 45mm lug-to-lug distance. The case presents a sophisticated combination of radial brushed surfaces surrounding the boxed sapphire crystal, polished chamfers, and brushed case sides that create dynamic light play across its surfaces.
Two crowns manage separate functions in the compressor tradition: the signed crown at 4 o'clock handles winding and time-setting, while the checkered-texture screw-down crown at 2 o'clock rotates the internal GMT disc for tracking a second time zone. The stainless steel case includes a silver internal turning ring and is rated water resistant to 10 ATM (100 meters / 330 feet).
Powering the watch is the proprietary Caliber AL-555, a Sellita-derived automatic movement with 26 jewels and a 38-hour power reserve. Its signature feature is an independently adjustable local hour hand โ a practical "true GMT" or "flyer GMT" complication that allows the wearer to jump the local hour forward as they travel across time zones, without disrupting the reference time on the GMT disc. The movement displays hours, minutes, seconds, a rotating GMT disc, and date. The blue sunray dial with luminous indexes and hands carries a vintage character that pays homage to classic pilot instrumentation from Alpina's heritage.
The watch ships on a brown leather strap that tapers dramatically, complementing the lugless case design and accentuating its retro proportions. The buckle doubles as the first strap keeper, simplifying the process of putting on the watch. Alpina was founded in Switzerland in 1883 and has been producing aviation-inspired sports watches since 1933.
