Walla Walla Sweet Onions are a prized heirloom variety grown exclusively in the Walla Walla Valley, spanning southeast Washington state and northeast Oregon. Recognized as Washington's official state vegetable since 2007, these onions are celebrated for their exceptionally mild, sweet flavor โ a direct result of the region's unique low-sulfur soil, which produces onions with significantly less pyruvic acid than standard varieties, yielding far less sharpness and a pronounced natural sweetness. Each onion is medium to large in size with a slightly globe-shaped or squat form, featuring a thin papery yellow-to-light-brown skin and crisp, juicy white flesh arranged in thin, tender rings.
These onions are especially well-suited for raw preparations where their sweetness shines: layered on burgers and sandwiches, sliced into salads, or minced into fresh salsa and dressings. They also perform beautifully in cooked applications such as French onion soup, caramelized onion tarts, savory onion jams, and slow-braised dishes, where gentle heat draws out their rich, sweet depth. Due to their high moisture content, Walla Walla onions are harvested by hand and are available for a limited seasonal window, making this 5-pound (2.27 kg) bag a convenient way to stock up on this Pacific Northwest specialty.
