The Butler is a single-vineyard, Rhône-style red blend crafted by Bonterra Organic Estates from grapes grown biodynamically at Butler Ranch, situated more than 1,500 feet above the Russian River on the eastern edge of the California Coast Range in Mendocino County. The estate is Certified Organic, B Corporation Certified, Biodynamically Farmed, and TRUE Zero Waste Certified. Sold at Costco as a 6-bottle case of 750ml.
The blend is composed of 63% Syrah, 18% Petite Sirah, 12% Mourvèdre, 6% Grenache, and 1% Viognier. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented separately by variety in stainless steel tanks for 10 to 14 days. The wine is then aged for 14 months in 100% French oak barrels, 12% of which are new oak, before the final blend is assembled. The 2020 vintage earned 95 points from both Wine Enthusiast and The Tasting Panel, and 91 points from James Suckling for the 2019 vintage.
Complex aromas of black currant, plums, black pepper, mushrooms, oregano, and bay leaf lead to a full-bodied palate with spicy mixed berries, purple fruit, and slate-tinged tannins, finishing with a clean, peppery blue fruit linger. Pairs well with grilled ribeye, lamb, or hearty pasta dishes. The wine is built for aging and is expected to develop further complexity through 2026–2036.
