A world-class German doppelbock from Ayinger Privatbrauerei, brewed in the small village of Aying just outside Munich, Bavaria. Founded in 1877, the Ayinger Brewery first crafted this beer in 1878 under the name "Fortunator," following the centuries-old monastic tradition established by Paulaner monks who brewed strong, malty lagers as sustenance during Lenten fasts. This 25.4 oz bottle contains a 6.7% ABV lager that has won multiple medals at the World Beer Championships and been ranked among the best beers in the world by the Chicago Testing Institute.
The beer pours a deep mahogany to near-black color with a dense, creamy tan head that lingers beautifully. On the nose, it offers deep malty sweetness layered with caramel, toffee, and molasses, along with dark fruit notes of raisin and plum, hints of chocolate, and fresh bread crust. The alcohol is well-masked, letting the malt and subtle yeast characteristics take center stage.
The flavor opens with a rich malt backbone presenting layers of toffee, chocolate, dark fruit, and a hint of nuttiness and roasted grain. A mild bitterness balances the noticeable sweetness and leads to a clean, smooth finish. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and substantial without being cloying, making this a quintessential example of the traditional Bavarian doppelbock style.
