Vieux Château Certan 2020 is a prestigious red wine from the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, France, available as a single 750 ml bottle. This wine earned a perfect 100-point score from Lisa Perroti-Brown of The Wine Independent. Offered through Costco's en primeur program, it was secured at release pricing from the 2020 vintage before bottling and released after aging.
Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest known growths in Pomerol, with roots dating to the early 16th century when the Demay family arrived from Scotland. The château buildings visible today were constructed in 1858 by owner Charles de Bousquet. In 1924, the Flemish wine merchant Georges Thienpont purchased the property, beginning the family's long stewardship in Bordeaux.
The 2020 growing season was defined by a wet winter followed by a dry, warm summer that produced low crop yields from old vines with naturally reduced vigor. The result is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The Merlot component is intensely aromatic, dense, and full-bodied, while the Cabernet Franc contributes smooth texture and remarkable complexity. The wine displays a deep purple-red hue with aromas of ripe fruit and an exceptional balance between freshness and concentration, with strong aging potential.
