La Tour Bakehouse's Poi Sourdough Bread is a unique Hawaiian artisan loaf that marries traditional sourdough with sour poi, the fermented taro paste that has been a staple of Hawaiian culture for generations. Both sourdough and poi undergo a natural fermentation process, which gives this bread its distinctive tangy flavor and chewy crumb.
The bread is crafted by La Tour Bakehouse, a family-owned Hawaiian bakery founded in Honolulu in 1984. The poi is sourced from Hawaiian Poi Co., a long-standing local partner, whose kalo (taro) is grown in Hawai'i. This collaboration reflects La Tour's commitment to supporting local agriculture and incorporating authentic island ingredients into their baked goods.
Baked fresh daily using artisan techniques under the direction of executive chef Rodney Weddle, this 20 oz sliced sourdough loaf is available at Costco locations in Hawai'i as well as select farmers markets and restaurants. It offers a soft interior, a slightly crisp crust, and a mild tang characteristic of naturally fermented breads.
