Château Angélus is a prestigious red wine from the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation in Bordeaux, France. This iconic estate was classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" from 2012 through 2021, the highest classification in Saint-Émilion, before voluntarily withdrawing from the classification system beginning with the 2022 vintage.
The wine is a Bordeaux blend, typically composed of approximately 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, sourced from a 27-hectare vineyard planted on slopes with clay soils and pied de côte with clay-limestone soils. The estate also cultivates a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 3%). The wine undergoes aging for 18 to 22 months in 100% new fine-grain French oak barrels with medium char, plus two new foudres.
Château Angélus exhibits an opaque purple-black color with a captivating perfume of kirsch, Black Forest cake, ripe plums, violets, and molten licorice, followed by wafts of underbrush, raspberry leaves, graphite, and hints of clove oil. The medium to full-bodied palate offers beautiful balance with bright, crunchy red and black fruits featuring remarkable energy and tension. The amazingly plush, silken texture carries shimmering flavors to a very long and fragrant finish. Best paired with beef and venison.
