Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Grand Cru Classé des Graves red Bordeaux from the prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation. The estate, with origins dating back to 1365, has been owned and managed by the Cathiard family since 1990, who have transformed it into one of the top producers in the region. The 67-hectare red wine vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (9%), and Petit Verdot (1%), with vines averaging 38 years of age and some old Cabernet Sauvignon vines exceeding 70 years.
The red wine is whole-berry fermented in temperature-controlled oak vats and aged in approximately 60% new French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months. The estate produces its own barrels through an on-site cooperage built in 1995. Tasting notes across recent vintages describe aromas of blackberries, black currants, smoke, cigar wrapper, and spice, with a palate showing layers of dark fruit, espresso, chocolate, and velvety tannins. The wine benefits from 8 to 10 years of aging and can cellar for 30 years or more in top vintages.
