Château Prieuré-Lichine is a prestigious Fourth Growth estate in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France, classified in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate traces its origins to a Benedictine priory before being acquired in 1951 by the noted wine author and merchant Alexis Lichine, who transformed it into one of Margaux's most recognized properties. Today the estate is owned by Groupe Ballande and managed with a focus on parcel-by-parcel winemaking.
The 77.5-hectare Left Bank vineyard is planted to approximately 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot across 150 separate parcels distributed throughout all five communes of the Margaux appellation — the only estate in Margaux with such breadth. Soils consist of gravel, sand, and clay at elevations of 15–20 meters. Fermentation takes place in tulip-shaped concrete tanks using whole-berry maceration, with malolactic fermentation completed in barrel. The wine is aged for up to 16 months in 55–65% new French oak before bottling.
The wine opens with aromatic notes of flowers, black currants, plums, licorice, tobacco, and cocoa. On the palate it is soft and silky with ripe black cherries, a creamy texture, and a fresh, lifted finish characteristic of the Margaux appellation. Young vintages benefit from decanting 1–3 hours; the wine reaches peak maturity between 10 and 25 years after vintage. Serve at approximately 60°F (15.5°C). It pairs well with beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, mushrooms, tuna, and aged cheeses.
