Château Carbonnieux is one of Bordeaux's most historic estates, with origins tracing to the 12th century when it was owned by the Carbonnieu family and used to produce wine for religious purposes. Classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves, the estate spans approximately 170 hectares in the prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation — making it among the largest in the region — with 55 hectares devoted to red wine production. Today the property is managed by Eric and Philibert Perrin, continuing a tradition of quality winemaking.
The red wine is a classic Bordeaux blend of approximately 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, harvested from vines grown in the gravelly, well-drained soils characteristic of Pessac-Léognan. After harvest, the wine is aged in French oak barrels, which imparts toasted and cedar notes that complement the fruit-forward character. Tasting notes include blackcurrant, blackberry, raspberry, and cherry with hints of licorice, graphite, tobacco, and crushed stone, all supported by well-balanced, silky tannins with a mineral finish.
This wine consistently earns high scores from major critics, ranging from 92 to 95 points depending on vintage, and typically benefits from several years of cellaring before drinking at its peak.
