Poças Reserva is a pioneering dry red wine from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, produced by the historic port house Poças Junior (also known as Poças). Founded in 1918 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Poças is a family-owned winery that for decades was celebrated for its ports before winemaker Jorge Manuel Pintão — a Bordeaux-trained enologist and alumnus of Château Giscours — began crafting world-class dry reds from the estate's oldest vineyard parcels in the early 1990s.
The Reserva is primarily a field blend of old vines aged 40 to 60 years, with 20% Touriga Nacional, Portugal's signature noble grape variety. Grapes are sourced from two estate vineyards: Quinta de Santa Bárbara in Ervedosa do Douro in the Cima Corgo sub-region, and Quinta de Vale de Cavalos in Numão in the Douro Superior. Both sites sit at elevations between 1,440 and 1,670 feet, providing cooler temperatures that preserve the wine's natural acidity. After hand-harvesting, the wine is aged 12 months in French oak casks, polishing the tannins and integrating the wine's complex flavors. The wine reaches approximately 14.3% ABV.
The wine pours an inky ruby-black with crimson-violet tones. It offers aromas of rich black plums, blackberries, and currants layered with dried spices, crushed peppercorns, cigar tobacco, and rock rose. On the palate it is silky and voluminous with notes of woodland fruits and a long, elegant finish. The 2020 vintage earned 93 points from Wine Advocate, described as "focused, precise and rather powerful, also perfectly balanced and built to age." Pair with red meat, ossobuco, oxtail, roasted lamb, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at 62–64°F (17–18°C). Drink now through 2035.
