D'Angelo Aglianico Del Vulture is a DOC-certified red wine from the Basilicata region of southern Italy, crafted from 100% Aglianico grapes grown in 30-35 year-old vines in Barile near Mount Vulture, an extinct volcano. The volcanic soil imparts unique mineral properties that enhance the wine's acidity and salinity, creating a rich and balanced character. The wine is aged for 18 months in large barrels, developing a rich, velvety smooth profile with ripe fruit characteristics.
The 2019 vintage was recognized as Wine Spectator's Top 100 wine of 2022, ranking number 49 on the list. The wine opens with a fantastic aroma of dark fruit complemented by deep baking spice and herbal notes, with a well-integrated bouquet that includes graphite or iron-like mineral undertones. On the palate, it delivers similar flavors with a dry, tannic, and chewy texture characteristic of the late-ripening Aglianico variety, known for its powerful character and thick grape skins. The finish is dry, dusty, savory, and very long, maintaining its quality even on day two after opening.
Produced by Casa Vinicola D'Angelo, a family-owned winery spanning over four generations with Erminia and Rocco as current owners, this wine represents over a century of expertise in Aglianico del Vulture production. Imported by Tri-Vin Imports. 13.5% alcohol by volume.
