Hamafukutsuru Shuzo Junmai Daiginjo "Hyoga" is a top-tier premium sake from the Hamafukutsuru Shuzo brewery (Koyama Honke Shuzo), located in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan — one of the country's most celebrated sake-producing regions. "Hyoga" (氷河) means glacier in Japanese, evoking the pristine, cold clarity of this expression. Junmai Daiginjo is the highest classification of sake, brewed using only water and rice with no added distilled alcohol, and with at least 50% of the rice grain polished away. Hamafukutsuru polishes their locally grown Hyogo rice to 45%, leaving just the pure, starchy core of each grain to produce an exceptionally refined spirit.
The sake delivers an elegant floral and fruity aroma characteristic of Daiginjo-grade brewing, with a smooth, silky mouthfeel underpinned by natural umami from the rice and a clean, crisp finish. Its flavor profile sits in the medium-dry range, making it highly versatile at the table. It can be enjoyed chilled or cold to best appreciate its delicate aromatics, though it also performs well at room temperature and even lightly warmed.
Hamafukutsuru's Junmai Daiginjo has earned consistent recognition at prestigious sake competitions, including multiple Gold Medals at The Fine Sake Awards Japan (2015–2018), a Premium Gold Award at the Kan Sake Award 2019, and a Grand Gold Medal at The Fine Sake Awards Japan 2021. Alcohol content is approximately 15% ABV. Each bottle contains 720ml, sold at Costco in a case of six.
