Astrolabe Pinot Gris is a dry, aromatic white wine from Marlborough, New Zealand, crafted by winemaker Simon Waghorn who founded Astrolabe Wines in 1996. The winery takes its name from the French exploration ship that charted the Marlborough coastline in the 19th century.
The wine blends fruit from multiple sites across Marlborough's diverse growing regions, with a core of north and south bank Awatere Valley fruit complemented by Wairau Valley and Kekerengu Coast selections. Most grapes are hand-picked and whole-cluster pressed to add fine texture and minerality, with the balance machine harvested at night to preserve freshness. The hand-picked portion is fermented on solids to enhance spice notes and palate weight.
In the glass, it shows a pale gold color with aromas of citrus peel, poached pear, and peach with light spice. The palate is pure, crisp, and dry with fine minerality and a delicate structure, featuring flavors of pear, quince, and peach. It is sustainably certified (SWNZ) and vegan-friendly, sealed with a screw cap. Best served chilled, it pairs well with poultry, pork, egg dishes, salmon, light pastas, and creamy mushrooms. The wine is capable of cellaring gracefully over several years.
