This 10-inch potted Tricolor Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Tricolor') is a deciduous flowering shrub prized for its striking variegated foliage and long-lasting lacecap blooms. The leaves display a vivid three-tone pattern of deep green, chartreuse, and creamy white, providing ornamental appeal throughout the growing season even when the plant is not in bloom. In spring and summer, large clusters of lacecap flowers emerge in soft shades of white, blue, or pink — flower color shifts with soil pH, leaning toward blue in acidic conditions and pink in more alkaline soils.
Mature plants reach 4 to 8 feet tall and equally wide with a naturally rounded, symmetrical habit, making them well-suited for garden borders, foundation plantings, large containers, or use as a striking houseplant. The plant thrives in full sun to partial shade, performing best when shielded from intense afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. Regular watering approximately twice per week is recommended, keeping soil consistently moist but well-drained. Overly wet or waterlogged soil can lead to root rot, so good drainage is important.
Hardy in USDA Zones 6 through 9, the Tricolor Hydrangea tolerates temperatures down to approximately 20°F. Even if top growth is killed back by frost in colder climates, established plants typically rebound from the roots the following season.
