Château de Beaucastel is one of the most celebrated estates in France's Rhône Valley, producing Châteauneuf du Pape from the appellation's northeast corner in Coudoulet. The estate dates to 1549 and has been managed by the Perrin family since 1909, farming organically since the 1950s and biodynamically since 1974. This 1.5L magnum format offers enhanced aging potential and is ideal for special occasions and cellar collections.
The red wine is a blend of all 13 grape varieties permitted by AOC law, with an approximate composition of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault, and other varieties. The wine is vinified using Beaucastel's patented brief heat-flash technique that preserves freshness and purity of fruit while limiting oxidation. Each variety is macerated and fermented separately before blending, then aged in large oak foudres for approximately one year.
The wine is known for its complex aromatics of dark red fruits, peppery spice, garrigue, meat, and earthy minerality. It is built for aging and is best approached with 6–10 years of bottle age in typical vintages, with the finest years capable of evolving for 20–35 years. Best served at 15.5°C (60°F), with decanting recommended for 2–3 hours on younger vintages. Pairs well with lamb, beef, game, duck, cassoulet, roasted meats, and hearty pasta dishes.
