Amancaya is a celebrated red blend from Bodegas Caro, a prestigious joint venture between Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite and Catena Zapata. This Mendoza wine merges Old World Bordeaux precision with Argentina's pioneering viticulture, resulting in an expression that is both authentically Argentine and internationally refined. Sold as a case of 12 bottles (750ml each).
The grapes are sourced from selected old-vine plots in Luján de Cuyo and Altamira in the Uco Valley, where vineyards thrive at elevations between 800 and 1,200 metres above sea level. Mendoza's arid climate, intense sun exposure, and significant diurnal temperature swings allow grapes to ripen slowly, building concentrated flavors while preserving bright natural acidity. The blend is typically composed of approximately 69% Malbec and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 50% of the wine aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and the remaining 50% matured in concrete vats to preserve fresh fruit character.
The wine pours a deep ruby red with a complex nose of violets, blackcurrant, blueberry, ripe figs, and hints of chocolate. The palate is round and generous, with soft integrated tannins, dark berry fruit, and a long, elegant finish. Recent vintages have earned scores in the 92–93 point range from major critics. Serve at 16–18°C and decant for approximately one hour before serving. Pairs well with roasted red meats, lamb, venison, hearty casseroles, and aged hard cheeses.
The name "Amancaya" comes from the Quechua word for an endemic flower found in the Andean foothills of the Mendoza region, reflecting the wine's deep connection to its mountain terroir.
