Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a red wine from one of the oldest and largest estates in the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, dating back to 1748. The estate spans approximately 100 hectares across the three signature terroirs of the region, including rolled pebble soils, stony sand and gravel terraces, and clay-limestone soils.
This traditionally vinified blend features Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Counoise, Muscardin, Vaccarèse, and Terret Noir — all 13 permitted grape varieties of the appellation are cultivated on the domaine. The grapes are fully de-stemmed and undergo pumping over twice daily, with a vatting time of two to three weeks in concrete vats, followed by 18 months of maturation in vats and barrels (15% barrel-aged).
The wine presents a deep crimson color with aromas of ripe dark fruit, crushed raspberry, blackberry compote, and spices. On the palate it is smooth, supple, and persistent with aromatic fullness. It pairs excellently with red meat, dishes cooked in sauce, lamb tagine, pan-fried mushrooms, and aged cheeses. This wine has an aging potential of 5 to over 15 years and has consistently earned scores of 90–94 points from Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and James Suckling.
