Villa Pani Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOCG is a red wine from the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, produced by Mondodelvino in the Asti appellation. Made entirely from Barbera grapes, it carries the DOCG designation—Italy's highest quality wine classification—and delivers impressive character for an exceptional value at around $10 per bottle.
The wine pours a deep ruby-garnet with good extract. On the nose it offers an intense array of red and black cherries, ripe blackberries, smoky notes, dried herbs, and a signature balsamic savouriness. On the palate it is medium-to-full bodied with bright cherry and raspberry fruit, lively acidity, earth tones, and round, prominent tannins that give a pleasantly velvety texture. The finish is tart and lingering. Alcohol: 14% ABV. Residual sugar: 7 g/l.
This wine opens considerably with aeration. A decant of at least three hours is strongly recommended before serving. It pairs beautifully with hearty Italian fare such as spaghetti and meatballs, grilled tri-tip, ribs, and other red-sauce dishes. Rated 89 points by Falstaff and averaging 87 points among community reviewers on CellarTracker.
