Opill is the first FDA-approved over-the-counter daily oral contraceptive pill in the United States. This progestin-only birth control pill contains 0.075mg of norgestrel and is estrogen-free, making it suitable for most people who can become pregnant. Each package contains 112 tablets providing a 4-month supply (4 packs of 28 days each). Opill works primarily by thickening cervical mucus to help block sperm from reaching the egg, and may also prevent ovulation in some cycles.
When used as directed and taken at the same time every day, Opill is up to 98% effective at preventing pregnancy. The pill starts working 48 hours after you begin taking it, so a barrier method like condoms should be used during the first two days. No prescription or doctor's appointment is required to purchase Opill. It can be purchased with HSA or FSA funds and is now covered by some insurance plans like CVS Caremark for $0 out-of-pocket.
