Wild-caught whole octopus sold fresh by the pound at Costco warehouse locations. These whole octopus are sourced from wild fisheries, typically from Philippine or Pacific waters, and are sold unprocessed with head and tentacles intact for maximum versatility in the kitchen.
Whole octopus is prized for its firm, slightly chewy texture and mild, sweet flavor that takes on the character of marinades, brines, and cooking liquids exceptionally well. It can be tenderized by slow simmering or braising, then finished on a hot grill or pan for charred, caramelized exterior. Common preparations include classic Spanish pulpo a la gallega, Japanese takoyaki, Italian seafood salads, and grilled Mediterranean-style dishes seasoned with olive oil, lemon, and fresh herbs.
Before cooking, whole octopus typically requires cleaning to remove the beak, ink sac, and internal organs. The skin can be left on or removed after cooking depending on preference. Tenderizing methods include gentle boiling in seasoned water for 45โ90 minutes until fork-tender, or using a pressure cooker for faster results. Freezing and thawing before cooking also helps break down muscle fibers and improve tenderness.
Octopus is a lean, nutrient-dense seafood high in protein and an excellent source of iron, vitamin B12, selenium, and omega-3 fatty acids.
