Fresh whole pomegranates sold by the case, approximately 8 pounds (3.6 kg). Pomegranates feature a hard red outer skin with jewel-like edible seeds called arils inside. Each pomegranate contains approximately 200 to 1,400 arils depending on size. Choose pomegranates that are plump, round, and heavy for their size. Store whole pomegranates for up to two months in the refrigerator, or remove the arils and refrigerate in an airtight container for up to five days. Pomegranate arils are versatile and can be added to smoothies, salads, dressings, yogurt, and desserts. Peak season is fall through winter.
