Ampelos Cellars Viognier is a white wine sourced from the Santa Rita Hills appellation in Santa Barbara County, California. The grapes are grown on Ampelos's estate vineyard, which holds the distinction of being the first vineyard in the United States to achieve simultaneous organic, biodynamic, and sustainability certifications. The 25-acre property is planted primarily with Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache, Riesling, and Viognier.
The wine is crafted using a minimalist, natural approach designed to let the varietal's character shine. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks using native indigenous yeasts at cold temperatures around 55°F to preserve delicate floral and fruit aromatics. Malolactic fermentation is deliberately avoided, resulting in a wine with crisp acidity and bright, clean fruit flavors typical of high-quality Viognier. No oak aging is employed, keeping the profile fresh and aromatic.
Ampelos Cellars is a small boutique winery producing approximately 3,500 cases annually. The Santa Rita Hills is one of California's most prestigious cool-climate appellations, known for producing wines with exceptional balance between fruit concentration and natural acidity.
