Nisia Las Suertes Old Vines Verdejo is a premium white wine from the Rueda D.O. in Spain, produced by Bodegas Vatan. Made from 100% Verdejo grapes sourced from ungrafted vines dating back to the late 1880s, this wine showcases the unique terroir of Codorniz in the province of Segovia, the highest-altitude subzone of Rueda.
The vineyard, Los Majuelos de Carrañabas "Las Suertes," is a 6-hectare parcel of goblet-trained vines farmed organically using traditional dry-farmed viticulture, cultivated entirely by hand. The sandy alluvial soils from ancient riverbeds naturally resisted phylloxera, allowing these remarkable pre-phylloxera vines to survive ungrafted for over a century.
The grapes are hand-sorted, destemmed, and pressed in a pneumatic press. After cold settling at 6-10°C, the wine is fermented with pied de cuve in 500L and 600L French oak puncheons and demi-muids. It is aged on the lees with bâtonnage for a minimum of 7 months, resulting in a beautifully textured, layered white wine with melon, hay, crushed stone, and subtle honey nuances, integrated acidity, and a long finish. The 2024 vintage received scores of 93-96 points from leading critics.
