Old Garnacha Vines OGV is a Spanish red wine crafted from 100% Garnacha old bush-vines, hand-harvested from high-altitude vineyards in the Calatayud DO appellation of Aragon, Spain. Produced at Bodegas Virgen de la Sierra — the oldest winery in DO Calatayud, founded in 1954 — this mountain wine is a zero-residues expression of pure Garnacha grown at elevations between 2,600 and nearly 3,000 feet above sea level, across a diverse mosaic of up to 20 different terroirs.
The wine undergoes a six-day pre-fermentative maceration followed by 16-day fermentation with Saccharomyces yeast at a maximum of 26°C in specially restored ancient cement vats, which offer ideal oxygenation for a rounded, well-integrated profile. Malolactic fermentation also occurs in the same cement vats. After a 15-day post-fermentative maceration, OGV is aged six to eight months in a combination of second-use French oak and new American oak barrels (medium and medium-plus toast, Doreau & Radoux), then rested a minimum of four months in bottle before release.
The wine pours a brilliant ruby color with violet hues. On the nose it delivers spice-accented blackberry and cherry aromas. The palate is silky and precise with a distinctly Garnacha character, finishing with excellent length and warm, round tannins. It has earned acclaim from multiple critics, including 93 points from James Suckling (2016 vintage) and Gilbert & Gaillard (2019 vintage), 92 points from James Suckling (2020 and 2021 vintages), 91 points from Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast, and Wine & Spirits.
Pairs beautifully with grilled octopus, Manchego cheese, roasted chicken, steak, or filet mignon, and is equally enjoyable on its own.
