Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry

Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing is the candid and deeply personal memoir by Matthew Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the iconic television series Friends. Published in November 2022, this New York Times bestselling autobiography chronicles Perry's extraordinary life from his Canadian childhood through his meteoric rise to global fame, and his decades-long battle with addiction to alcohol and prescription opioids.

Perry writes with disarming honesty and self-deprecating humor about the highs and lows of Hollywood stardom, his complicated relationships with love and friendship, and the near-fatal health crises that brought him face-to-face with his own mortality. He recounts multiple stints in rehabilitation centers, a gastrointestinal surgery in 2018 that left him in a medically induced coma for two weeks, and the physical and emotional toll of prolonged substance dependence.

The book is also a story of resilience and hope. Perry reflects on his deep desire for connection, his search for romantic love, and the friendships forged both on and off the Friends set. Written in his signature witty, self-aware voice, the memoir offers readers an unflinching look behind the scenes of one of television's most beloved shows while delivering a powerful message about recovery, survival, and the courage it takes to seek help. The hardcover edition includes 16 pages of personal photographs.
