Clos du Roy is a red Bordeaux blend produced in the Fronsac appellation, located on the Right Bank of Bordeaux near Libourne in southwestern France. The wine is predominantly Merlot, rounded out with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, a classic blend that reflects the limestone and clay soils of this historic yet underrated appellation.
Fronsac is one of Bordeaux's oldest wine regions, producing structured reds with excellent aging potential at accessible price points. Clos du Roy is consistently recognized for its balance of fruit and terroir character, earning 90-point scores from critics for recent vintages. Tasting notes describe a fruity, vibrant, medium-bodied wine with sweet, ripe, red, and spicy berries, a cool touch of mint, minerality on the finish, and hints of cocoa. Older vintages often show cedar, baked dark cherries, spice cake, underbrush, and wild sage, with chewy tannins and refreshing acidity. The wine drinks well from release and has cellaring potential of over a decade.
Pairs well with roasted meats, lamb, duck, hearty stews, and aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F). Best enjoyed in a large Bordeaux-style glass.
