Penfolds Bin 21 is a single varietal Grenache sourced from low-yielding old vines in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, with some vines planted as far back as the 1930s. The inaugural Bin 21 release debuted as part of The Penfolds Collection 2023, marking a significant milestone in Penfolds' long relationship with Barossa Valley Grenache. The Bin 21 designation honors the 21 years between Penfolds' first single varietal Grenache expression in 2002 and this landmark release, crafted under the direction of Red Winemaker Shavaughn Wells.
This medium-bodied red wine opens with an inviting bouquet of strawberry, cranberry, pomegranate, rose hip, and wild berries, with hints of chocolate and baking spice. On the palate, it delivers lively, succulent red fruit flavors anchored by refreshing acidity and round, silky tannins that provide excellent balance and length. Community reviewers have awarded it an average of 91 points on CellarTracker, with professional coverage from Decanter, Jancis Robinson MW, James Suckling, Vinous, and the Halliday Wine Companion.
Grenache has flourished in the Barossa Valley since the 1840s, aided by the region's warm, dry Mediterranean-style climate. Penfolds traces its use of the variety back to the Penfold family's original vine cuttings brought from the south of France, first planted at The Grange homestead in Magill in 1844. Bin 21 represents the culmination of many years of trials under Penfolds' Cellar Reserve program and is sold as a case of six 750ml bottles.
