Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2021 is a prestigious Grand Cru Classé red wine from the Pessac-Léognan appellation in Bordeaux, France. This 750ml bottle features a refined blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot sourced from a 78-hectare vineyard with vines averaging 35 years old.
The wine exhibits an engaging, dynamic character with beautifully delineated notes of gravel, menthol, licorice, mocha, and spice. Critics describe aromas of pink roses, blackcurrants, strawberries, vanilla, milk chocolate, violets, lavender, forest fruit, and beeswax, leading to a juicy, bright core of red berry fruits with dark fruit, meat, and chocolate on the palate. Medium-bodied and refined, the wine features soft, well-integrated tannins with tobacco and red and black fruit notes.
The estate, owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard since 1990, employs sustainable biodynamic techniques and produces 70% of its own barrels through an in-house cooperage. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo dual sorting passes before fermentation in state-of-the-art gravity-flow cellars under the guidance of consultants Michel Rolland and Stéphane Derenoncourt. The property earned a Robert Parker Green Emblem in 2020 for sustainable viticultural practices.
This vintage received outstanding critical acclaim with 96 points from Vinous, 96 points from Decanter, and 96 points from James Suckling. Drinkable now but improves with one to two years of aging, with cellaring potential until 2045-2050. Pairs excellently with beef, lamb, game, charcuterie, and cheese.
