Château Léoville Las Cases is a prestigious Second Growth Bordeaux from the Saint-Julien appellation, often regarded as a "Super Second" estate that rivals First Growth quality. This exceptional red blend is crafted from estate vineyards totaling 98 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon (67%), Merlot (23%), Cabernet Franc (10%), and small amounts of Petit Verdot. The vines average over 40 years in age, with some Cabernet Franc vines approaching 90 years old.
The crown jewel of the estate is the Grand Clos, a 50-hectare walled vineyard featuring deep gravel soils over clay and sand subsoils. This prized parcel borders the legendary Château Latour in Pauillac, separated only by the Juillac tributary. The exceptional terroir benefits from heat regulation and a microclimate that shields vines from frost while enabling optimal ripening.
Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in a combination of temperature-controlled oak vats, concrete, and stainless steel vessels. The wine is then aged in approximately 90% new French oak barrels for 18 months before being fined with egg whites and bottled. This traditional winemaking approach produces a powerful, structured, and tightly-knit wine with remarkable complexity and extraordinary aging potential.
The wine showcases a classic Pauillac-like character with notes of cedar, cassis, dark berries, truffle, and tobacco when mature. Léoville Las Cases is renowned for its austere power in youth, typically requiring 15 to 20 years or more to develop and shed its tannic structure. Mature bottles can evolve beautifully for 20 to 50 years post-vintage. Robert Parker noted that it "is certainly one of Bordeaux's longest-lived wines, and seems to have more and more of a character resembling Lafite Rothschild." The Delon family has owned and managed this exceptional estate for generations, maintaining the highest standards of viticulture and winemaking.
