Château Montrose 2021 is a prestigious Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) from the renowned Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux's northern Médoc region. This vintage earned 97 points from Wine Advocate, with critics hailing it as a candidate for "wine of the vintage" in the Médoc.
The 2021 Grand Vin is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot, representing a meticulous selection of just 39% of the estate's production. Medium to full-bodied with a deep, concentrated core, the wine displays signature Montrose characteristics of graphite, black currant, pencil lead, and black pepper, with subtle notes of green bell pepper adding complexity.
More elegant than powerful, the 2021 offers silky tannins, great mineral character, and a layered multidimensional profile that transcends the vintage's challenges. Tasting notes highlight blueberry, blackberry, dark plum, clove, and star anise. The wine benefits from 60-minute decanting to reveal its deeper tertiary nuances and the earthy Saint-Estèphe terroir.
Château Montrose has been producing exceptional wines since 1815, making it the youngest of the 1855 Classified Growths. The estate's 95-hectare vineyard sits on deep gravel with sand and clay soil, with vines averaging close to 40 years of age. Under the Bouygues family ownership since 2006, the estate underwent a 55-million-Euro renovation while implementing sustainable and organic farming practices. Best enjoyed from 2030-2055, this wine requires patience but rewards with decades of development potential.
