Château Calon Ségur is a legendary Third Growth (3ème Grand Cru Classé) estate from the Saint-Estèphe appellation on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, France. One of the oldest properties in the Médoc, with records dating to 1147, Calon Ségur is instantly recognizable by the heart on its label — a nod to the Marquis de Ségur who famously declared his heart belonged to Calon. The 2021 vintage is a 750ml bottle of the estate's flagship red wine.
The 2021 Château Calon Ségur is composed of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, harvested from extremely low yields of just 26 hectoliters per hectare. The wine was aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels, reaching 12.9–13% alcohol by volume. It is a medium-to-full-bodied wine with dense, ripe tannins, vivid acidity, and flavors of black cherry, cassis, black raspberry, licorice, menthol, espresso, tobacco, violets, and cedar. The finish is long, mineral, and refined.
Critically acclaimed across all major publications, the 2021 earned 97 points from both Vinous and Wine Enthusiast, 95 points from Decanter, and 93–94 points from Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, James Suckling, and Jeb Dunnuck. Vinous ranked it #39 in their Top 100 wines of 2024. Wine Spectator notes the wine is best from 2025 through 2037, with approximately 7,800 cases produced worldwide. Ideal with roasted lamb, duck breast, aged hard cheeses, and classic Bordelaise preparations.
