Château Durfort-Vivens is a prestigious Second Growth estate in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, ranked in the 1855 Classification. This elegant red wine is produced from biodynamically farmed vineyards, making it the first classified growth in Margaux to receive Demeter certification for 100% biodynamic farming. The estate has been owned by the Lurton family since 1961, with Gonzague Lurton currently managing the property.
The wine is crafted from a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (85-97% depending on vintage), with Merlot (3-13%) and a small amount of Cabernet Franc (2%). A distinctive feature of Durfort-Vivens is the use of clay amphora jars for aging, alongside traditional French oak barrels. The wine exhibits medium body with elegant, fresh character featuring red currants, cassis, cherries, and tobacco notes. Tasting profiles include blackberry and blackcurrant flavors with oak, tobacco, vanilla accents, and subtle floral notes of violet and lilac.
Best served at cellar temperature (60°F/15.5°C) after decanting for 1-2 hours. This wine pairs excellently with beef, lamb, duck, game, roasted chicken, hearty fish like tuna, mushrooms, pasta, and aged cheeses. The wine typically reaches peak maturity between 10-20 years after vintage and can age gracefully for two decades or more.
