Château Pédesclaux is a Fifth Growth Bordeaux from Pauillac, classified as a Grand Cru Classé in 1855. This red wine is crafted from a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The estate is fully committed to organic viticulture, certified organic since 2022, with vineyards farmed using environmentally responsible methods under the Lorenzetti family's stewardship. The 45-hectare vineyard features gravel terroir over clay subsoil, with prime parcels neighboring Châteaux Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, and Pontet Canet.
The wine offers vivid blackcurrant aromas with floral notes, cedar, cigar box, tobacco leaf, and subtle mint or herbaceous touches. On the palate, it delivers vibrant, fresh fruit with menthol-tinged blackcurrant and cedary oak, balanced by fine supple tannins and a creamy texture. The finish is elegant, lifted, and fruit-focused with layers of cassis, blackberries, and spice. The winemaking uses a gravity-fed cellar designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, with fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and aging in 60% new French oak barrels for approximately 12 months.
This wine benefits from 8-10 years of bottle aging and reaches peak maturity between 10-25 years after vintage. Decant young vintages for 1-3 hours before serving. Best served at 15.5°C (60°F) with classic meat dishes including beef, lamb, duck, game, or roasted poultry. The estate has been dramatically improving since the Lorenzetti family acquired it in 2009, with recent vintages (2015 and newer) representing a significant quality upgrade. This is a Pauillac on the rise, offering excellent value for a classified growth.
