Château Branaire-Ducru is a prestigious 4th Growth (Quatrième Cru Classé) estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France, with a history dating back to 1680. Originally part of the vast Beychevelle estate, it has grown into one of Saint-Julien's most consistent and celebrated châteaux. The 2021 vintage is a classic Bordeaux blend composed of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, and 5.5% Petit Verdot, bottled at 12.9% alcohol by volume.
The 2021 Branaire-Ducru earned 94 points from both Vinous (Antonio Galloni) and Decanter. Galloni called it "sleek, elegant and nuanced," with alluring aromatics of dark cherry, plum, chocolate, leather, rose petals, lavender, graphite, and dried herbs. The 2021 vintage features a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc compared to recent vintages, lending the wine a classically austere, structured character with excellent aging potential. It is best approached with patience, with an optimal drinking window from 2025 to 2041.
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, and aged hard cheeses.
