Château Fleur Cardinale is a prestigious Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé estate located on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, France. The 2021 vintage is a red Bordeaux blend of 75% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 90% new oak barrels. It was harvested between October 1 and 12, reaching a natural alcohol level of 13.5%. The 2021 was a challenging year for the estate—its first year of conversion to organic farming—resulting in a 50% reduction in production due to spring frost and mildew. The estate has been owned and managed by the Decoster family since 2001, with consulting from Michel Rolland Laboratoire.
The 2021 Fleur Cardinale opens with an intensely perfumed nose of dark chocolate, blackcurrant liqueur, dark plum, and blueberry, with hints of licorice and spice. On the palate it is medium-bodied, juicy, and fresh with fine, ripe tannins, a bright mid-palate, and a refined, persistent finish. Critics praised it widely: James Suckling awarded 94 points calling it "refined and linear"; Vinous Media gave 94 points noting it is "dense, rich, and beautifully layered"; Decanter awarded 94 points calling it "a real success of the vintage"; Jeb Dunnuck scored it 93 points; and Wine Advocate scored it 92 points. The wine pairs excellently with beef, lamb, poultry, and game. Contains sulfites.
