Chateau Barde-Haut is a Grand Cru Classé estate situated in the Saint Christophe des Bardes sector of Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France. The 2021 vintage is a Bordeaux blend composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, sourced from 16 hectares of clay-limestone soils with vines averaging 35 years of age. The estate practices sustainable viticulture with manual harvesting, and the wine is aged in 80% new French oak barrels. Annual production is approximately 70,000 bottles.
The 2021 vintage offers a fruity nose of strawberries, red currants, and spices with hints of hibiscus and mineral character. On the palate it is medium-bodied with fine, dusty tannins, juicy fruit, and a pleasing tension from chalky tannins. Notes of black cherry, plum, mocha, spice, and new leather add complexity, while the finish is bright, fresh, and polished. Critics have awarded the 2021 an aggregate score of approximately 91 out of 100. The wine is approachable now and is expected to reach its peak from 2025 onward, pairing well with beef, venison, and rich red meat preparations.
