Château Cos d'Estournel 2021 is a prestigious Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) Bordeaux from the Saint-Estèphe appellation in the Médoc region of France. This grand vin is composed of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, crafted from grapes grown on the estate's oldest vines averaging fifty-five years of age. Only 53% of the vintage was selected for this grand vin, aged in 55% new French oak barrels.
The wine opens with distinctive black tea and pepper notes before revealing layers of dark berries, cassis, blackberry, and black fig. Rich aromas of plums, exotic spices, loamy soil, and rose petals complement a medium to full-bodied, deep, and seamless palate. Expect firm, compact tannins with blackcurrant, pencil-lead, and graphite character, along with nuances of cedar, tobacco, dried herbs, menthol, and licorice. The finish offers notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and vanilla.
Professional ratings for the 2021 vintage include 94-96 points from Vinous, 94-95 points from Wine Advocate, 94-95 points from James Suckling, 95 points from Decanter, 93 points from Wine Spectator, and 96 points from Wine Enthusiast. Optimal drinking window is 2027-2050.
