Harlan Estate The Maiden is the celebrated second wine of Harlan Estate, one of Napa Valley's most acclaimed cult wineries. Introduced in 1995, The Maiden is crafted from estate-grown fruit that does not make the final selection for the Harlan Estate flagship wine, resulting in a Bordeaux-style red blend of exceptional quality and pedigree. The blend typically consists of Cabernet Sauvignon as the dominant variety, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, mirroring the classic Left Bank Bordeaux approach that defines Harlan's winemaking philosophy.
Vinified with the same meticulous attention to detail as the flagship, The Maiden undergoes extended maceration and aging in French oak barrels. The wine is known for its deep, concentrated fruit character featuring dark cherry, cassis, and blackberry, layered with notes of cedar, tobacco, graphite, and subtle floral elements. The structure is elegant with velvety tannins and a long, polished finish that rewards both near-term drinking and extended cellaring of 15 to 25 or more years.
Critics have consistently praised The Maiden, with vintages earning scores in the mid-90s to high-90s from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, and James Suckling. Sold as a case of six 750ML bottles at Costco, this offering represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of California's most sought-after luxury red wines. It pairs exceptionally well with prime cuts of beef, braised lamb, aged hard cheeses, and rich game dishes.
