Triga Chardonnay is a limited-production, single-vineyard white wine crafted by Bodegas Volver in the Denominación de Origen (D.O.) Alicante, Spain. The name "Triga" derives from an ancient Latin term for the union of three horses pulling a chariot, symbolizing the convergence of three mountain ranges—Sierra de Salinas, Sierra de Umbria, and Sierra de la Sima—that together create the distinctive high-altitude terroir of this exceptional wine.
The wine is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes sourced exclusively from a single vineyard, Finca El Paredon, situated at 2,300 feet above sea level between those three mountain ranges. Despite the region's desert-like landscape with less than 6 inches of annual rainfall, the poor, shallow soils—comprised primarily of limestone with chunks of pure chalk—combined with a Mediterranean climate moderated by continental influence, produce grapes of remarkable intensity and natural acidity. The vines are sustainably dry-farmed using only natural, organic fertilizers, yielding just 2 kilograms per plant.
The grapes are hand-harvested in late August into small boxes to prevent damage, then 100% fermented in 225-liter French oak barriques. After fermentation, the wine undergoes 8 months of aging on the lees with frequent bâtonnage—twice weekly for the first two months, weekly for the next four, and biweekly for the final two months—building richness and texture. Production is strictly limited to 4,000 bottles (14 barrels). Alcohol content is 13.5%. Contains sulphites.
