The Nicolis Ambrosan is the flagship wine of Azienda Agricola Nicolis Angelo e Figli, a family estate founded in 1951 in San Pietro in Cariano in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone of Veneto, Italy. The wine takes its name from the family-owned "Ambrosan" vineyard, a gently southwest-facing slope that provides the estate's finest fruit. It carries Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG classification, one of Italy's most prestigious appellations for big, structured red wines.
The blend is composed of 70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, and 10% Croatina, sourced entirely from the Ambrosan estate vineyard. Following harvest, grapes are dried for approximately four months using the traditional appassimento method to concentrate sugars, flavors, and structure. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks over 30 days in winter conditions, followed by 30 months of aging in large Slavonian oak barrels and smaller barriques, and an additional 8 months of bottle refinement before release. The wine reaches approximately 16% alcohol by volume with approximately 6.6 g/L residual sugar.
In the glass, the Ambrosan presents an intense garnet red. The nose offers complex layers of dried flowers and fruits, balsamic herbs, cloves, tobacco, cocoa, and leather. On the palate it is full-bodied, structured, and soft, with a lingering finish described by the estate as "three-dimensional." It has earned consistent critical acclaim, including scores of 93โ94 from Wine Spectator, 94 from James Suckling, and the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso. It pairs beautifully with game, roast meats, and aged or spicy cheeses, and is an exceptional meditation wine. The bottle should be opened at least one hour before serving and poured into large balloon glasses to allow full aromatic expression.
