Fontodi's Flaccianello della Pieve is one of Italy's most celebrated Super Tuscan wines, crafted from estate-selected Sangiovese grapes grown in the Conca d'Oro ("Golden Bowl") area south of Panzano in Tuscany's Chianti Classico zone. First produced in 1981, it has become a benchmark expression of pure Sangiovese outside the traditional DOCG rules, classified as a Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT.
The Fontodi estate spans 320 acres (130 hectares) and has been owned by the Manetti family since 1968. Under Giovanni Manetti's stewardship since the 1980s, the estate has been fully certified organic since 2008 and embraces biodynamic farming practices, including maintaining a herd of Chianina cattle for high-quality compost. The wine is vinified in stainless steel and aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, producing a structured, age-worthy red of exceptional depth.
Flaccianello della Pieve displays a deep ruby color with an intense bouquet of dark cherry, plum, blackberry, and wild berries, accented by hints of spice, leather, and dried herbs. The palate is rich and powerful with firm, well-integrated tannins and a long, elegant finish. It has received near-perfect and perfect scores from major critics across multiple vintages, including 100-point scores from Antonio Galloni (Vinous) and Monica Larner (Wine Advocate), and 13 Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri awards in 17 editions.
